Fast. Cheap. Yummy.

I don’t eat “Tex-Mex” from yankee restaurants.

Is that a tostada? Creamy jalapeñ o sauce?
is this in North Austin?

Fine. More for me. But you should know that El Fenix was founded in 1918 by the Martinez family, who were most decidedly not “yankees”. They just catered to yankees, which may end up looking phenotypically identical, but still.

It was a stack of tostadas thing with p ork between the layers. That’s queso blanco on top.
This is in East Dallas, right near my grocery store. Convenient!

Mmmmm, looks delicious!

It ain’t gourmet fare, but it always hits the spot just right.
Actually, it usually carpet bombs the spot, and surrounding intestinal areas.

Gotta love finding good, local, family owned joints like that - they’re invariably pretty cheap, but the food is made with love.

Yep, except that they are now a chain that was sold to an investment firm ten years ago. But they’re still local and the food hasn’t really changed at all. It still feels local and family run.

Damn, that sounds good.
DUnno why I thought you lived in Austin...

It was.
Maybe ‘cause I jaw a lot with ttyymmnn about Texas stuff. It’s too hard to keep track of everyone . Full marks for even trying in my book.

Casa Linda on Garland Road? I was run over by a drunk old lady in that parking lot once. Good times.
I’m a Chuy’s g uy myself but El Fenix is solid.

El Felix near downtown still open? Fantastic memories.

Probably she was coming out of the cafeteria next door.
I swear, I have seen some pricey rides, Bentleys, Maybachs, at that place.

It is. We go to the Perot science museum and then walk across the street for dinner. Still making memories.

Is it in Dallas?

Yep.

North of Waco = Yankee.

I’m okay with that definition.
I worked with a friend from Guadalajara who, obviously, knows what Mex-Mex tastes like, as opposed to Tex-Mex. He took us to a place for lunch once called Neuvo Leon. It was in a kind of pricey area and did fancy cuisine, though. He admitted that it’s hard to find Mex with out the Tex in it in Dallas.

The kicker is that we DO have Mex Mex here, but you don’t go to swanky restaurants to get it. The Norteño-style foods are what you find in taquerias all throughout Texas (but especially in Houston and San Antonio). It’s the only area of Mexico you won’t get a cross look for when you ask for a flour tortilla’d burrito.
The central/southern/west coast styles of Mexican food, though... nope.

However, my favorite Tex-Mex/Mex-Mex food comes from little family-owned taquerias/restaurants , and cash-only taco joints.
Barbacoa is love.

El Fenix at Casa Linda? That used to be my El Fenix when I lived in 75218.

That’s it. So you know the stomping grounds then.

I do indeed. Every time we’re back in Dallas we have dinner at Alfonso’s, which we miss very much.

We’ve been to Alfonso’s a couple of times. We tend more toward Lovers in Casa Linda.
